The History of Nintendo
Nintendo started bringing consoles to the public with the introduction of the NES-Nintendo Entertainment system in 1985. 60 million of these consoles were sold and for the first time we were introduced to Super Mario! The NES was a cartridge style console and games such as Zelda and Mega man were available.
In 1989 the Game Boy emerged-the first hand-held portable console and in 4 shades of grey. Tetris was the game that was linked with this console. The Game Boy was bulky and the graphics were blurry but it lasted 7 years or so before technology moved us on.
1991 saw the SNES arrive-the 16 bit Super Nintendo Entertainment System-the update of the successful NES. This technology enabled games to become more graphic and interesting and the SNES sold more than 49 million consoles all around the world!
In 1996 The Nintendo64 was released which saw an improvement in graphics again and 3D play. N64 as it was known was so-called because of its 64 bit CPU. It was the last of the consoles to use ROM cartridges. In this year came the Game Boy pocket-smaller than the original console and the outer casing came in a variety of colours. The screen display was till monochrome but clearer and bigger. Game Boy Color with its coloured graphics reached the shelves in 1998.
In 2001 the Game Boy was improved with the Game Boy Advance which came with a bigger screen and of course, better graphics! The design of the system allowed for comfort as it being shaped like the curves of a hand. It also had the ability to link up to four Advance systems together to allow for group competitive play.
During this year the GameCube introduced us to optical discs instead of the cartridge style of game and the graphics again had improved.
The portable market changed again when Nintendo brought out the Game Boy Advance SP in 2003 – lighter and smaller and with more user-friendly features. It was a foldable version of the original with the added benefit of a front-lit LCD screen.
Next came the Nintendo DS-with two screens, touch screen, microphone and numerous other features. It was a very popular portable hand-held device. In 2006 came the Nintendo DS lite- a smaller, lighter version.
The latest technology can be seen in the Nintendo Wii with its WiFi capability, wireless controllers and interactive games.
Nintendo has certainly moved with the times and kept up with technological advances whilst providing plenty of gaming fun and entertainment!
